Almandine garnets are more like the colour of red wine, red with a blue tint. These tend not to be expensive, especially the small stones. Spessatite garnets go from a red-brown colour to an intense orange. The intense orange is very expensive and can be confused with hessonite. Grossular Garnet or Tsavorite garnet, an electric fiery emerald green colour, is not usually found in large stones, but under half a carat is fairly common. It is found in Kenya and Tanzania. Hessonite garnet is commonly known as “cinnamon stone” for it’s orange-brown colour and can be easily confused with spessatite, but has a slightly different chemical composition. Demantoid garnet is a lemon yellow/green colour, with intense “fire”, hence the name demantoid – diamond like. It is slightly softer than other garnets, 6,5-7 and is the most valuable of the garnets. It is very rare to find large stones, and can often be confused with emerald, but it’s fire is a distinguishing factor. It is not very popular, possibly because it is not a well liked colour. Most people would probably choose a peridot or tsavorite over a demantoid garnet. It is found in Namibia and Russia.
